Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie – Vegan and GF
See how to make this delicious chocolate raspberry smoothie—a sweet treat you can toss together in minutes.

If you like the combined flavors of chocolate and raspberry (who doesn’t?) you are going to love this chocolate raspberry smoothie recipe. It reminds me of a dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling – but with the creamy texture of a shake. However, while the flavor suggests a decadent dessert, this smoothie is made with healthy ingredients—including some dark leafy greens you would never guess were there!
About the Ingredients
- Plant Milk – I use rice milk or unsweetened soy milk. Rice milk has a consistency similar to skim milk and adds an extra touch of sweetness. Soy milk is slightly thicker, makes a creamier smoothie, and offers more protein. Both work well, but feel free to use whatever plant-based milk you prefer.
- Banana – It may go without saying, but the riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie. A perfectly ripe banana has brown speckles and is easy to peel.
- Baby Spinach – The recipe calls for 1 cup of baby spinach, but that doesn’t mean you have to break out your measuring cup. The amount you can grab in your hand should be fine. It’s okay to eyeball it.
- Frozen Raspberries – Using frozen raspberries creates a cool creaminess without adding ice cubes. It might just be me, but I can’t stand the sound during blending or the wateriness ice adds to a smoothie.
- Pure Vanilla Extract – If you spend any time reading through plant-based recipes, you may have noticed some call for alcohol-free vanilla extract. I personally don’t care if my vanilla has alcohol in it. But if you’re wondering what’s the difference and whether you should care, you might find this article by A Raw Story interesting.
- Dark Cocoa Powder – I’m fond of Hershey’s Special Dark Dutched Cocoa Powder. The Dutch process reduces the cocoa’s acidity and has a smoother flavor. If you’d like to know more about the difference between Dutched and natural cocoa, check out this article by Serious Eats.
- Walnuts – Here’s something I’ve learned: the chopped walnuts you find in the baking section of the grocery store are usually cheaper than ones you find in the produce or dry goods section. Check and tell me if I’m wrong! 😁
Recipe Variations
I enjoy variations of this chocolate raspberry smoothie recipe when I need a chocolate fix. It satisfies my chocolate cravings while providing some healthy nutrients. Sometimes I’ll use baby kale instead of baby spinach and swap out the walnuts for almonds or other kinds of nuts or seeds.
